The Argane Foundation The Foundation, located in Morocco, was created to increase the number of argane trees to its previous levels through a number of plantation projects. Concepts such as agriculture without irrigation or with micro-irrigation will permit families to get a decent return on their crops. Argane trees will form the base of the concept and serve to protect other crops that will be planted along with the tree, such as aromatic plants, medicinal plants and grains. These other plants will complement the revenue from the argane trees, and the entire farming operation will be certified organic by an international organization. The Argane Foundation's goal is to plant argane trees and other plants on a surface of at least 1000 hectares by the end of 2005. When the feasability of the different concepts is demonstrated, 500 families will be earning 24,000 dirhams a year from farming an area of two hectares by 2006 ($1=10 dirhams). The Argane Foundation will support other programs for the targeted populations involved in our project, such as bringing electricity and potable water to communities, literacy classes and public health campaigns. The Argane Foundation can claim to have achieved its goals when: The surface area of the argane forest will have stopped getting smaller and will have started to grow at a rate of 1% per year for five consecutive years. 500 families are benefitting from an annual revenue of 24,000 dirhams for three consecutive years, and during this period, the number of families will grow 10% each year. Their houses will have water and electricity, and their school-age children will be going to school so that 50% of these children will reach a scholastic level that will enable them to attend a university. 80% of the people under 50 years old actively involved in the Foundation's projects will know how to read and write.
